Pomerol:

The supple, velvety red wines from this part of Bordeaux are among the most magnificent (and expensive) in the world. Most of the wines of Pomerol are made from Merlot gripes, although here has been some blending of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are deep-colored, full-bodied and possessing of soft tannins.

Syrah:

Originally grown in France’s Northern Rhône Valley (where it is a noble variety) this grape has spread to Australia, California, Washington, Italy and Spain. In the Rhone region this grape produces deeply colored wines with full body and firm tannin, however in Australia, where it is known as Shiraz, the wines are lighter and fruitier. Aromas and flavors for these wines vary as much as their geographical breadth suggests: berries, smoked meat, bell peppers, even tar.

Shiraz:

Australian name for the grape known as Syrah in France.

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 1/2 tbsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 cups apple cider
2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease and flour two loaf pans or eighteen muffin cups.

2. Cream the butter and 1-1/4 cup of the sugar together in a large bowl. Add eggs and cream thoroughly.

3. Sift the dry ingredients together. Add them to the egg mixture, alternating with the apple cider. Stir in the chopped apples.

4. Divide the batter between the prepared loaf pans. Combine the remaining 1/4 cup sugar with the cinnamon in a small bowl, and sprinkle it over the batter.

5. Bake for 50 to 70 minutes for bread, or for 30 to 40 minutes for muffins, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
